The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Early Impressions, 1965
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Early Impressions, 1965
A complete rare, early impression set of Tolkien’s famous ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy: ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ (14th impression), ‘The Two Towers’ (11th impression), and ‘The Return of the King’ (11th impression). All three books were printed in the UK in 1965, just 11 years after ‘Fellowship’ was first published. Their proximity to the original release of the trilogy make them an ideal addition to any Tolkien or rare books collection.
Each book contains an original unfolding map of Middle Earth, derived from those created by Tolkien and his son, Christopher (3 total). Also included is a foreword by Tolkien and an additional illustrated map (both in book 1), synopses in books 2 and 3, and a full 103 pages of appendices in book 3, including family tree charts, world timelines, and breakdowns of Middle Earth languages. All books are in their original cloth bindings and dust jackets. Pages are coloured red to match on their top edges.
Condition is good, as seen in photographs. Interior pages are near-fine, almost untouched, with very occasional marks, and some light blemishing on the outside edges. Cloth bindings are in very good condition with a few minor marks. Dust jackets are showing their age in places: faint stains are present, particularly on book 3, as well as tears to edges and spines, fading to lettering on spines, and general discoloration due to age.
All 3 books have small pen inscriptions on their front endpapers, and pencil dates on their rare endpapers (all viewable in pictures). For a more detailed overview of condition, please refer to supplied photographs.
